In my continuing quest to find some tea from the Azores, I ran across this nugget from ye old New York Times (July 27, 1879) describing one of the first encounters with leaf from St. Michael. Gotta love a backhanded critique like "the flavor of the infusion [is] by no means to be despised." A century before
Frank Rich, no less.
"It is prophesied" is interesting. Perhaps it was really foretold to soften the weighty spiritual implications of the availability of this tea. That's how a modern person would lighten things up a bit.
